Following a glittering Viennese New Year gala opening on Saturday 19 January, the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival kicks off officially on the 25th of January. From 25 January to 3 February, a host of international and local artists and ensembles will join forces to celebrate the Jubilee edition of this annual festival, first launched in 1999. The theme of the festival this year is "Ein Musikalischer Spass" ("A Musical Joke"), which pays tribute to the humorous element in music.
Don't miss the clarinet and piano recital by Flemish clarinettist, Annelien Van Wauwe, accompanied by Florian Uhlig, taking place at Northwoods House on Wednesday 30 January, at 19.30. Selected as a BBC New Generation Artist (2015-2017), and currently principal teacher at the Royal Conservatory Antwerp, Annelien Van Wauwe is acclaimed for her proficiency on modern and period clarinets and considered a leading clarinettist of her generation. Following her concert at the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival, Flemish clarinettist Annelien Van Wauwe will perform at the Brooklyn Theatre in Pretoria on Tuesday 5 February. Accompanied by Florian Ulhig on piano, the concert will include works by Debussy, Saint-Saëns, Schubert, Brahms and Scheine.
