On Tuesday 19 May, the General Representation of the Government of Flanders, in cooperation with Çavaria and the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS & Gender of the University of Pretoria, organised a webinar on "Queer Resilience in the time of Covid-19".
The webinar formed part of the IDAHOT 2020 Digital Series, a series of webinars hosted by the embassies of Sweden, Ireland and France and the General Representation of the Government of Flanders in the framework of the International Day against LGBT+ phobia, known as IDAHOT. The IDAHOT 2020 theme is “Breaking the silence”, and calls on everyone to speak up, to share their stories, to raise their voices and to claim their right to be heard. Breaking the silence has become even more crucial in the current lockdown situation, as confinement to our homes and other restrictions put our physical and mental wellbeing at risk, whilst physical distancing makes our usual support networks less readily available.
The speakers at the webinar were Eva Declecrck and Davide Secci (Çavaria), Roché Kester (OUT LGBTI well-being), Sebenzile Nkambule (The Other Foundation) and Akani Shimange (Matimba Organsiation). The panel discussion was moderator by Suntosh Pillay.
