Social entrepreneurship drives sustainable job creation and tackles both societal and environmental challenges. As part of its Development Cooperation with South Africa, the Government of Flanders supported programmes on job creation through small enterprise development, with a specific focus on social entrepreneurship and social innovation.

The Industrial Development Corporation is a valued partner and the Government of Flanders has supported the IDC’s Social Enterprise Fund since 2013. This partnership, meant to drive investment in the social economy in South Africa, particularly in the most marginalised and poor rural communities, has proven to be highly impactful.

Social enterprises can tell unique stories about addressing the social and environmental needs of communities through sustainable business models. Unfortunately, those stories are seldom told. IDC has however compiled a publication aimed at redressing this shortfall by highlighting a number of case studies that testify to the invaluable work of individual social enterprises, their business case and socio-economic impact, and the number of jobs they create.

The Government of Flanders is privileged to support those enterprises and their entrepreneurs, and to touch people’s lives through their work.
